A limerick of human mortality.
Tiny pumping machine.
The scalpel is ready to slice, it is very keen.
Maintaining life is what it does.
But this heart is aged, it does not pump as good as it was.
It stops, and the body fades despite the efforts of the machine.
Author note
A limerick is a challenging poem. The structure is specific and must be executed accordingly. While this limerick is far from perfection, it does tell a story. As a poet, the words you use matter. Telling a story impacts the audience and the writer.
In this case, we choose to write of an elderly person having bypass surgery. The heart is an amazing machine that works in the body. However, it will eventually stop.
Exploring the mortality of humanity in poetry helps us be introspective.
Literature is a representation of society. No matter what you write, poem, blog, article, or fiction, you are contributing to the future narrative of society. Writing with intention is our goal, so we tackle each poem with that in mind.
